Workers' Compensation

Texas Pressure Washing Contractor Workers' Compensation Insurance

6 min read Pressure WashingUpdated July 2026

Pressure washing produces severe, unusual injuries. High-pressure injection injuries from wand tips, chemical exposure from detergents, and falls from lifts are the top claims. High-pressure injection injuries are surgical emergencies and can be amputation-level. Texas does not require workers' comp for private employers, but a pressure-washing shop without it puts the owner's personal assets behind every injection and chemical claim and locks the shop out of commercial work.

High-Pressure Injection Exposure

High-pressure injection injuries from wand tips are the signature pressure-washing claim. A wand-tip injection forces water and contaminants under the skin and requires immediate surgical decompression — a severe, expensive claim. Never-disconnect-under-pressure training and wand-safety protocols reduce both injuries and the experience modifier. Carriers ask about wand-safety programs; a documented program is a premium factor.

Chemical and Lift Exposure

Detergents and brighteners cause chemical burns and respiratory exposure. Lift work for high washing causes fall injuries. PPE, respirator programs, and lift certification reduce both injuries and the experience modifier. Documented chemical-safety programs are a premium factor.

Owner and Officer Coverage

Texas allows sole proprietors and officers to exclude themselves from workers' comp. Many pressure-washing owners include themselves because working owners face the same injection, chemical, and lift exposures. An owner who excludes himself has no wage-loss or medical coverage for his own injury — and a self-inflicted injection injury can be amputation-level.

Uninsured Subcontractor Exposure

If you use 1099 washing crews without workers' comp, an injured sub can bring a claim against your policy. Texas carriers charge uninsured subcontractor exposure at the pressure-washing rate at audit. Requiring 1099 crews to carry their own workers' comp and name you additional insured removes the exposure and the premium.

What Commercial Clients Require

  • Workers' comp with statutory Texas benefits and employer liability of $1M/$1M/$1M
  • Waiver of subrogation in favor of the property owner
  • Coverage continuing through the washing contract term
  • Certificate delivered before contract activation
