Texas Handyman Insurance Requirements

7 min read HandymanUpdated July 2026

Handymen in Texas work across small repairs, maintenance, and light remodeling for residential and small commercial clients. Each line carries property-damage risk and completed-operations risk from repair defects. Insurance for handymen has to account for the broad range of work performed and the licensing line that separates a handyman from a licensed specialty trade.

General Liability for Handymen

GL for handymen centers on property damage and completed operations. A failed repair, a damaged fixture, or a misapplied patch is a claim. Standard limits start at $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate for residential and small commercial work. Verify your GL covers the handyman class code and does not exclude the trades you actually perform.

The Licensing Line

Texas does not require a general contractor license, but specialty trades — electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and irrigation — are state-licensed. A handyman who performs electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work without the required license is performing unlicensed work, which is uninsurable. The GL policy will deny a claim arising from a trade performed without the required license. Keep handyman work to non-licensed repairs or subcontract licensed trades to licensed professionals.

Workers' Comp for Solo Operators

Most handymen are solo operators with no employees. Texas doesn't require workers' comp for private employers, and a sole proprietor can exclude himself. The trade-off: if you are injured on a job, there is no wage-loss or medical coverage. Some handymen include themselves for the medical-only protection, especially those doing ladder or tool work. Commercial clients may require a workers' comp certificate or a policy-with-no-employees even from a solo operator.

Tools & Equipment (Inland Marine)

Handyman tools — drills, saws, ladders, and small power tools — are frequently kept in trucks and moved between job sites. Inland marine coverage protects against theft, the most common handyman loss. Verify coverage extends to tools in transit and on site, and that per-item limits cover your most expensive tools.

Commercial Auto for Handyman Trucks

A handyman truck is a business vehicle. Personal auto policies exclude business use. Carry commercial auto with adequate limits — Texas minimums of $30K/$60K/$25K are low for a loaded work truck. Add hired and non-owned if you occasionally use a personal vehicle for work errands.

What Clients Require from Handymen

  • General Liability with $1M/$2M minimum
  • Workers' comp or a policy-with-no-employees for commercial clients
  • Additional Insured endorsement on the policy
  • Waiver of subrogation in favor of the property owner
  • Certificate of Insurance before contract activation
  • Subcontracted licensed-trades COIs if you sub electrical, plumbing, or HVAC
