General Liability
Texas Handyman General Liability Insurance Cost & Coverage
Handyman general liability in Texas is one of the least expensive contractor GL lines — but the coverage has to respect the licensing line between handyman repairs and licensed specialty trades. A correctly structured handyman GL reflects your actual repair mix and excludes the licensed trades you subcontract. The defining handyman claim is a failed repair or a damaged fixture — a claim the GL should cover provided the work was within the handyman scope.
Handyman Class Codes Carriers Use
Carriers rate handymen on a general handyman class code with the lowest contractor base rate. If a handyman performs a specialty trade without the license, the carrier will deny the claim — and may re-rate the policy at the higher specialty class code at audit. Keep payroll classified as handyman by staying within non-licensed repairs and subcontracting licensed trades.
The Licensing Line and Coverage
Texas licenses electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and irrigation at the state level. A handyman GL policy excludes claims arising from licensed work performed without a license. The policy may also exclude the licensed class code entirely. If a handyman performs a licensed trade, the claim is uninsurable and the work is illegal. Subcontract licensed trades to licensed professionals and collect their COIs.
Completed Operations for Repairs
A failed repair — a leaking patch, a loose fixture, a damaged connection — is a completed-operations claim. Handyman GL must include products and completed operations coverage. Verify the policy covers resulting property damage from a failed repair even when the cause is your workmanship. Some policies attempt to exclude faulty workmanship entirely; avoid those.
What Drives Handyman GL Cost in Texas
Base rate per $1,000 of payroll, modified by repair-vs-maintenance mix, residential-vs-commercial, and Texas exposure. A solo handyman with $50K–$100K payroll often pays $500–$1,000 for $1M/$2M — among the lowest contractor GL premiums. A multi-crew handyman business running $300K payroll can pay $1,500–$3,000 plus an umbrella. Subcontractor cost to licensed trades is generally excluded from the handyman premium base when sub COIs are collected.
How to Lower Handyman GL Premium
- Keep work within the handyman class code — subcontract licensed trades
- Collect COIs from licensed-trade subs and name yourself additional insured
- Document repair and tool-safety programs — carriers discount verified programs
- Carry an umbrella only if commercial clients require higher limits
