Texas Flooring Contractor Insurance Requirements

7 min read FlooringUpdated July 2026

Flooring contractors in Texas work across wood, tile, carpet, vinyl, and epoxy flooring. Each line carries property-damage risk and completed-operations risk from installation defects. Insurance for flooring contractors has to account for the chemical exposure from adhesives and finishes, the crews who install on their knees, and the completed-operations claims that surface after install.

General Liability for Flooring Contractors

GL for flooring contractors centers on property damage and completed operations. A flooring defect — buckling, lifting, or adhesive failure — is a completed-operations claim. Standard limits start at $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate for residential and commercial work. Verify your GL covers the flooring class codes you actually perform — wood, tile, carpet, vinyl, and epoxy — and that completed operations is included without a short sunset.

Completed Operations and Installation Claims

Flooring defect claims often surface months after installation — buckling, lifting, grout failure, or adhesive failure. Completed-operations coverage is essential, and the policy should not cap it with a short sunset. Some policies attempt to exclude faulty workmanship entirely; avoid those, because resulting damage from a failed install is exactly what GL should cover.

Workers' Comp for Flooring Crews

Flooring crews install on their knees, handle adhesives and finishes, and operate saws and cutters. Knee injuries, chemical exposure, and lacerations are top claims. Texas doesn't require workers' comp for private employers, but commercial GCs almost always require it before letting a flooring sub on site. Without workers' comp, a single serious injury is an uninsured event against the owner personally.

Tools & Equipment (Inland Marine)

Flooring equipment — nailers, sanders, saws, and commercial tile cutters — is expensive and frequently moved between job sites and trucks. Inland marine coverage protects against theft and damage. Verify coverage extends to equipment in transit and on site, and that per-item limits cover your most expensive sanders and cutters.

Commercial Auto for Flooring Trucks

Flooring trucks haul flooring, adhesive, and tools in loaded trucks and trailers. A loaded truck accident can exceed Texas minimum auto limits of $30K/$60K/$25K. Carry commercial auto with adequate limits and add hired and non-owned for crew using personal vehicles for work errands.

What GCs Require from Flooring Subs

  • General Liability with $1M/$2M minimum (commercial: $2M/$2M)
  • Workers' Compensation with employer liability
  • Additional Insured endorsement (CG 20 10 or CG 20 37)
  • Waiver of subrogation
  • Primary and non-contributory wording
  • Completed operations coverage for installation claims
